ALASKAN CRAB FISHERY
The Alaskan crab fleet fishes the waters of the Bering Sea and the Aleutian Islands (BSAI). There are major fisheries directed for King, Tanner and Opilio species of crab. The course for the Crab Observer Program is separate from groundfish training. Crab Observers perform sampling, monitoring and reporting duties similar to those performed in the Groundfish Program. The crab vessels are typically 100 to 190 feet in length and will stay at sea from 8 to 20 days before returning to port.
